How Gold is Priced
The price of gold jewellery comes down to three things: the current market rate for gold, the purity of the piece, and any charges added on top. The market rate is quoted per gram for a given karat, and multiplying that by the weight of the piece gives the base gold value. GST is then added on the gold value at 3%.
For example, if 18K gold is priced at ₹5,125 per gram and a piece weighs 8 grams, the gold value works out to ₹41,000. Adding 3% GST brings the final price to roughly ₹42,230. Heer by GIVA does not add making charges on most collections — one less variable compared to traditional jewellers, where making charges of 8–25% are common.
What moves the rate daily
- International spot price— Gold is globally traded — its dollar price sets the baseline every local rate starts from.
- Rupee–dollar exchange rate— A weaker rupee pushes up the local rate even if the dollar price has not moved.
- Import duty and taxes— Customs duty and GST both feed into the retail rate.
- Domestic demand— Festive and wedding seasons typically see heavier buying and firmer rates.
- Investor and central bank activity— Gold is treated as a hedge asset, so shifts in sentiment or in official reserves move prices.
GST on gold jewellery
A flat 3% GST applies to the gold value regardless of whether it is a coin, bar, or finished piece — lower than the rate on most other goods. Jewellers charging separate making charges must add a further 5% GST on those charges. Since Heer by GIVA does not charge making charges on most collections, that second layer of GST simply does not apply.
